Surgical Sutures

Surgical suture is a medical thread used to close the wound and surgical incision. It is used to control bleeding, close a surgical wound, bring tissues edges together, and provide support to internal organs during the healing process. A surgical suture price depends on these features like material, size & configuration, absorbability, and brands.  You can segment it into different types depending on the materials it has. Examples are absorbable, non-absorbable, nylon, ethibond, and poliglecaprone. Suture's average price starts from ₹500 and goes up to ₹ 54,700 in India. Some top brands include Suture India, Ethicon. B Braun, and Covidien. You can buy surgical suture online from Hospital store.

What is the Surgical Suture?

A surgical suture is used to hold the body tissues together after an injury or surgery. It is a special medical thread used by surgeons or medical professionals to stitch wounds or incisions. It is made from different materials like silk, nylon, polypropylene, or even absorbable materials like catgut or synthetic polymers. Also, it comes in various forms such as absorbable and non-absorbable.

What is the purpose of surgical suture?

A minor skin cut on the arm or leg, a more complicated facial laceration, an abdominal incision, or a median approach to make are examples of these injuries.

Intend of Use:

  • It is used to close the surgical incision or wound.
  • Surgical thread is used to control bleeding by ligating blood vessels.
  • Sutures help to bring together the edges of tissues that have been cut or torn.
  • Surgical sutures are used to reduce the risk of infection to reduce tissue trauma to provide a suitable environment for wound healing.
  • Sutures provide support to internal organs or tissues during the healing process.

Different Types of Surgical Sutures:

We have a wide range of surgical sutures, classified suture material such as absorbable and non-absorbable.

Absorbable Suture:

These are made of natural materials that degrade when they come into contact with the skin. Nowadays, the most common material is chromic catgut. The material naturally degrades after 7 days, but it is sprayed with chromium salts to speed up the process and keep it strong for up to 2 weeks.

Now we understand the different types of absorbable sutures:

  1. Catgut: A catgut suture is a natural monofilament absorbable suture used for stitching internal soft tissue wounds or lacerations. It not be used for cardiovascular or neurological procedures. This completely disappears between 60 and 120 days.
  2. Polydioxanone (PDS): This synthetic monofilament suture is used for many types of soft tissue wound stitching such as abdominal closure, it is also used in pediatric cardiac procedures.
  3. Poliglecaprone (MONOCRYL): This suture is generally used for soft tissue stitching, and couldn't be used for cardiovascular or neurological procedures. The suture is used for subcuticular dermis closures on a patient's face and as a ligature.
  4. Polyglactin (Vicryl): This polyglactin synthetic braided suture is ideal for the stitching of hands or facials. This vicryl suture can be harmful for cardiovascular or neurological procedures.

Non-Absorbable Suture:

Non-absorbable sutures are not degraded by body enzymes and are not hydrolyzed in body tissue. These surgical sutures are made from a variety of nonbiodegradable materials and ultimately encapsulated or walled off by the body's fibroblasts. These sutures usually remain where they are buried.

Now we understand the different types of non-absorbable sutures:

  1. Nylon sutures: Nylon sutures are made from a synthetic polymer, generally used for wound closure, including surgery and suturing of lacerations. It's known for its strength, flexibility, and resistance to stretching.
  2. Polypropylene (Prolene): It is made from a synthetic polymer, a non-absorbable material, means it doesn't break down in the body and must be removed manually. It is used in cardiovascular, orthopaedic, plastic, and general surgery.
  3. Silk: This non-absorbable silk suture is made from silk fibres, generally used in surgeries where long-term wound support is needed. It's known for flexibility, and ease of handling, making them suitable for a wide range of surgeries such as cardiovascular, ophthalmic, plastic, general, and orthopedic surgery.
  4. Polyester (Ethibond):  Polyester suture also known as Ethibond, is made from polyester fibers. It is ideal for those surgeries where long-term support and tensile strength are required for durability and resistance to stretching. This suture is used for various surgery such as orthopedic, general, cardiovascular, plastic and reconstructive surgery.

We have understood the types of sutures and their materials above. Now we will learn about the structure of suture material, which is divided into two parts: monofilament and multifilament.

Monofilament: Monofilament sutures are made from a single strand, such as nylon or prolene. It is less fatal and reduces the chance of infection because it easily passes through tissue. These sutures are mostly used for stitching open wounds or cosmetic surgeries. You can experience their poor knot security and low tensile strength.

Multifilament: Multifilament sutures are made of many filaments twisted together. They have two types: twisted and braided. They're easier to use and offer strong knots security. These sutures have disadvantage, can increase the chance of infections because they can soak up fluids. Also, they can hurt the tissue more because they rub against it more than other sutures.

What are the benefits of sutures?

Firstly we have to understand the common benefits of surgical thread, after we will discuss benefits of absorbable and non-absorbable suture benefits:

  • Sutures promote healing by connecting the edges of the wound.
  • These can help to minimize bleeding by applying pressure to blood vessels.
  • It helps in approximating tissues by ensuring the layers of tissue are properly aligned.
  • It reduces the risk of bacterial contamination by closing the wound.
  • These surgical thread restores the function of the injured body part.

Benefits of Absorbable Sutures:

  • The main benefit of this suture is that the body breaks them over time.
  • These absorbable sutures are more flexible compared to non-absorbable surgical stitches.
  • These sutures reduce tissue reaction and inflammation than non-absorbable sutures.
  • Absorbable sutures come in various formulations and materials.

Benefits of Non-Absorbable Sutures:

  • These non-absorbable sutures maintain tensile strength and provide long-term support to the wound.
  • These threads do not degrade within the body, that why they reduce the risk of harboring bacteria.
  • These sutures maintain their strength for a more extended period compared to absorbable ones.
  • Non-absorbable sutures come in various sizes and materials, making them suitable for a wide range of surgical procedures and wound types.

Exploring the Pricing Factors Behind Surgical Suture:

Surgical suture cost depends on multiple factors, some of the important factors that play an important role are below.

Surgical sutures price according to materials and sizes:

Material: Surgical threads are made from a variety of materials like silk, nylon, polyester, and absorbable materials such as polyglycolic acid (PGA) or polylactic acid (PLA). That's the reason for the absorbable sutures higher price.

Size and Configuration: For different surgical needs, sutures come in various sizes and configurations. Thicker or longer sutures may cost more due to the increased material used.

Example:

Sutures India Monoglyde USP 2-0 will cost you approximately ₹ 2,400.

Sutures India Monoglyde USP 3-0 price is ₹ 3,300.

Absorbability: Absorbable sutures are broken down and absorbed by the body over time. Due to their specialized structure, they are more expensive than non-absorbable.

Surgical Suture Price according to brands:
